Serialization is one of those fundamental capabilities that seems almost mundane until you need it, at which point it becomes indispensable. The ability to take any LFE term—no matter how complex, nested, or philosophically questionable—and convert it to a byte stream that can be stored, transmitted, and perfectly reconstructed is a minor miracle of engineering.
The External Term Format has survived decades of use in production systems, processed trillions of messages, and generally proven more reliable than most things in computing (and definitely more reliable than the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation’s products).
