Maps: The Associative Enlightenment
In Which We Discover That Keys Unlock More Than Doors
Maps arrived in Erlang R17 with the quiet confidence of someone who knows they’re about to revolutionize everything but is too polite to mention it. Think of them as the sophisticated cousin of records and proplists—the one who studied abroad, speaks three languages, and somehow makes ordering at restaurants look effortless.
Unlike records, which are really just tuples wearing a very convincing disguise (the compiler sees right through it, naturally), maps are actual first-class citizens of the Erlang VM. They’re associative collections of key-value pairs that would make any self-respecting dictionary jealous, if dictionaries were capable of jealousy, which in Erlang they decidedly are not, being mere modules and all.
